June marks Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, and to honor the strength of the millions of families affected.
What is Alzheimer’s?
Alzheimer’s is a progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory, thinking skills, and the ability to carry out simple tasks. It is the most common form of dementia, affecting over 6 million Americans. While it typically begins with mild memory loss, it can progress to severe impairment, eventually impacting the ability to communicate, recognize loved ones, or care for oneself.
The Emotional Toll on Family Caregivers
For family members, watching a loved one struggle with Alzheimer’s is heartbreaking. Often, the caregiving role falls on spouses, adult children, or other close relatives. These caregivers provide emotional support, manage medications, coordinate appointments, and assist with daily needs like bathing, dressing, and eating.
This commitment, while often made out of love, can lead to chronic stress, burnout, and feelings of grief, isolation, and guilt. Caregivers may have to balance work, family responsibilities, and their own health needs—all while navigating the emotional weight of watching someone they love change before their eyes.
